Stopping Hangout Invites From People You Don't Know

How To Stop Hangout Request From People You Don't Know

Disruptive Technology At It's Worst

You know the deal  You're in a groove. All the pieces are there, and things are falling in place. You used 25 Pomodoro minutes to plan the project. Then you took a five minute break to catch up on your circles. Time blocking is working as it should. Online everybody says hello, and there's been no evident shift in the world's rotation. All you have to is implement your plan. It's a sure thing. You thought you heard someone yell "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner".  Your phone vibrates, or you notification bell rings. Either way, you look up, and it's someone requesting a hangout.

Don't Go Towards The Light Jim!!

Instead of averting your eyes elsewhere, you stare at it. Just like the train wreck it is. And you pick up.  Even though you don't even know who it is.

Functionality Not Enabled Message - SOLVED!

Team Email As A Strategy

Ubiquitous connectivity has created many opportunities. Especially when it involves collaboration. Teams are constantly being created to discover, develop, and deploy global solutions. Team members need to communicate internally and with external sources. Email is an integral part of most communication plans. Receiving email from BeerKegHauler69@yahoo.com can affect the way the whole team is viewed. Email addresses with the same domain name can help establish credibility. Addresses are easy to create and very inexpensive. Most email administrators can create an address in less than a minute. So what’s the best way to handle this new address, if you are the user?

How To Center Blogger Elements

Centering Blogger Elements

Blogger isn't that hard to use.

But there are times I want to give up on it.  Like when a simple tasks turns into an all day adventure.  Titles don't line up and images are squashed. Page breaks are shoot and miss. And don't get me started on the SEO issues. IMHO it's harder than it has to be. I think this because I've developed in other platforms. WordPress, Drupal, Stripe, and even Joomla are easier to use.  But when it comes to management, Blogger beats them hands down.  And if you want to just login and post, Blogger does that. You just can't do the usual point and click stuff.   So let's simplify a few of them on a sitewide level.

Enabling Templates In Google Drive

Creating templates can save you a lot of time in ANY application.  Creating them in Google Docs/Drive is especially helpful because you can share them with people very easily.  Before you can create then however, they must be ENABLED in the Google Apps Administrative Panel.  I suppose I could write my own directions, but it's much easier just to cut and paste them from Google's Instruction page :-)  I did create a blurry, not so clear video that takes less than 20 seconds to watch.  It's posted below.  If you follow the read more link below that, you will see the instructions that Google created as well.  I hope this helps!

Spam The Torpedoes! Full Streams Ahead!

Do you get a lot of irritating Spam? If you said yes, then do something about it. And I don't mean sending hate emails to the senders. It's probably a spoofed account anyway. Calling them won't do any good either. What you need to do is figure out how to manage your email system. Anything other than that is just wasted time and energy. You will never get them to stop. Ever. By the time you write that witty missive, you could have already learned something about filtering, reporting, and auto-deleting it. I maybe able to help you with that. Post your question below and tell me what program you use to retrieve your email. I'll do my best to help Or if you prefer, contact me here. There is no charge for this. All I ask is that you pay it forward. You can add me to your circles if you want. Or add my page to your circles (even better)  Or you can like me on Facebook.  You can even join my community if you want. Or not.  Either way, I just want to help. Read my mission statement below to know why!

B12, Obamacare, Judge Dread and the Medicare Scare

Sometimes you read things on someone's feed that just makes you cringe. After all, you've been on road trips with them. You've fallen asleep in the passenger seat while they were driving. You even trusted the short cut they knew about that wasn't on Google Maps.  And yet here they are reposting a story they read on WingnutPotstirrers.com as if they had expereinced it themselves. It's as if their ability to reason went out the window once they found out {insert current unpopular public figure here} was involved.

Video Not Available In Your Country Fix - Sometimes

So you just made friends with somebody cool like Paul Bond . Even though he works for Brix , which is "only" the 4th largest workwear store in Monaghan, he's still got great taste in 'artsy fartsy' stuff. Unfortunately, he's not that bright  aware, when he sends out links sometimes.  Consequently, he sends out links to really cool stuff that YouTube says  'aren't available in your country'. Well, that's simply not true. It is available, and I have no idea why they even want to make you think it isn't. Connectivity is what all this stuff is about.  Or at least that's what I thought when I signed on almost 30 years ago. I'm pretty sure it's not the band that doesn't want you to hear their music, unless of course they are Lars Ulrich.  So what do you do? How to get around this? Read on...

How Unpublishing Articles Got Me More Readers

So apparently when you turn a post into a draft, and then re-publish it again, it re-posts it to your stream as well. Bear in mind that happens ONLY IF you have the 'Google+" link enabled in your Blogger Dot Com account, which I do. That's not really a good thing for what I was trying to accomplish. But it could be a good thing for what actually happened. My goal was to unpublish around 188 articles on Surfin With Stan, and then move them one by one to their new home on Stan Bush Dot Net. I have a different plan for Surfin With Stan now and wanted to get most of those posts "off the grid" so to speak. I wanted that site to be clear of any of the old posts that won't be relevant once the switch is made. But that didn't happen.

Facebook's New Timeline Search Setting

Yeah! I know. Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water. Only now, it's even tougher. It's not just about watching out for Sharks. You have to worry about how far from shore you are and how deep the water you are. By that I mean, friends of friends friends who are friends with a page with a group... or some such nonsense.  It's not like anybody really knows what all that stuff means anyway. It's too much for us mortals. That's why Einstein waited for Al Gore to create the Internet. He knew he wouldn't be able to explain it to us blunt skull members of the Earth is Flat Society. We just figured out what the Timeline is, and now Facebook has changed something again. So the question is...What are you going to do about the Snarks with the long tail now?

A Tip On Organizing Photos In G+ Instant Upload

Do you take pictures with your phone? Do you have Instant Backup/Upload enabled? If so, then you already know that the images are automatically synced to the Instant upload folder in Google+ Photos. That's a wonderful thing. But what do you do with the pictures once they are uploaded? If you're like me, you like to stay organized. So what I USED to do is go over periodically and copy them to other albums, and delete the originals. But that quit working. For some reason the 'Move' button is greyed out and I can't even select it. So I couldn't do anything with them. I was not liking it. But I found a solution.

How To Customize Blogger's Popular Post Widget

If you're reading this, you're probably not a 'code warrior'.  You're probably like me.  You can't just sit down and pound out page after page of ampersands, brackets and ampersands. You're more of a tweaker.
That doesn't mean you can't usually get the results you want from a template.  It just means that sometimes you have to search for helpful websites to give you some guidance. Something sort of 'specific' in context, but 'general' in terms of offering the solution. That's what this is.  It's a way to change the way your 'Most Popular Post" module in Google's Blogger application appears on your page.  This is how you can do that.

Google Authorship On Difficult Blogger Templates

The first time I saw somebody' picture show up in Google, I clicked on their link.  Period. I was no longer wondering or looking for whatever was in the search term. I wanted to know about them.  Personally.  So I started reading about what it was.  I found out that if I was using Blogger (which I am) then I 'couldn't get there from here.'  I knew there was no way that could be correct, I mean.. Google owns Blogger. Right? It wound up the third party template that I was using was 'running interference' for what I was trying to accomplish by using poorly coded widgets, whodoos and what nots. I eventually decided to fix the problem with a little wizardry of my own. I have switched templates now, but just in case you're having an issue with yours, here's how I did it. Don't forget to roll over the neat images at the bottom of the post. It's what I live for.

How To Create A Blogger Menu From A Label

If you've used Google Blogger for a while, you've already experienced HMS.  Because I made up the term HMS for this article, it's possible you may not know what it is. HMS is the three letter acronym for what I call 'Hollywood Menu Syndrome". That's when you try to make a menu in Blogger, can't figure it out...so you 'act like' it don't matter to you.
Take my advice and don't give up your day job. You aren't going to win any oscars for this role. The truth is,  menus do matter. And Blogger's ability to create them are not very intuitive. Notice that I didn't say 'awful'.  That's because once you figure some basic stuff out, you can make a pretty attractive site using Blogger. My mission is to help you do that...using Google Apps and tools.

How To Turn Off Facebook Group Notifications

So you got an invitation to join a group on Facebook. All your friends are there. You'll have a chance to catch up on everybody, everywhere, and on everything they do. This sounds wonderful! But pretty soon you have so many pictures of grand kids, sunsets, food, quotes and pets that you can't keep up. The bing ding dang dong notifications start to mount up. It's a 24 hour unrelenting stream of really interesting stuff. It really is. But there's simply too much of it. Fortunately, you can control it. The 10 second video at the bottom of this post will show you how to start liking cats all over again.

How To Remove The Nav Bar On A Blogger Site

One of the things that I hear is that Google Blogger is too hard to personalize. That's true about some things, not so much about others. One of the things I hear about is the Nav Bar. If you have a blog that's hosted with Google Blogger, there's a good chance that you have one of these. All blogger accounts come standard with them installed. There's really nothing wrong with these, and sometimes I don't mind clicking on the 'next' blog just to experiment. It's always a interesting. But it's a guessing game as to what you'll get A shot in the dark. The video at the end of this article will show you how to get rid of it.

Should You Host A Site On Google Drive?

MagicalRealms.net is hosted on Google Drive
I've been hosting HTML 'sub sites' on Google Drive for a while. The site in the picture above Magical Realms, is hosted on Google Drive. The video under the Video tab is hosted on Google Drive as well.  It's really not as new a concept as you might think. By using DNS, Sub domains, and other kiddie hack a-rounds, this has been available for a while. Just about anybody that had more than a cut and paste knowledge of "how the stuff works" could do it.  These directories were being used for sharing files and collaborating on documents. They weren't pretty, but they worked.  Because there has been so much interest in it lately, I decided to revisit it and see how difficult it was to make a more presentable site.  I would presume that for most people, the attraction would be to save the $10 a month hosting fees.  You can read the instructions here to see if it's worth it to you.  I'll do my best to stay away from all the blah blah and stick with easier instructions.  Just be aware that if you don't know how to upload files and folders to Google Drive, you need to learn that first.

Blogger Header On Home Page Only!

One of the things about Blogger vs some of the other blogging platforms, CMS applications, and wiki's is the way it handles it's navigational structure. Most platforms provide you with some sort of tool allowing you to construct menus of navigation based on more than one criteria. For example, if you don't want something to show up on a certain page in Joomla, you simply deselect it in the list of pages you want it to be displayed on. Blogger isn't like that, at all. In order to make some things work, you're going to have to get your hands dirty. That doesn't mean you're going to have to know how to code, but if you are afraid of brackets, ampersands, and quotation marks, I'd suggest you hire someone to help you. If not, then you might find this article useful.

Setting Up RSS Feeds in HootSuite

+Vikram Kinkar is a member in a community that I manage.  We were discussing Google Reader going dark. He convinced me that perhaps I needed to revisit RSS feeds.  There are plenty of readers and aggregators, but he suggested Feedly.  Since one of the things on my drawing board is to feed The Circadians website with content by the community members, I figured I would take a look at it. I was about 20 minutes into research when I decided I would take a look at HootSuite's RSS tools as well.  I've used HootSuite for a while and really am not in the mood to try out a new application anyway.

Removing The Title From Blogger Static Page

I didn't like the "Title" that was there by Default on a Blogger site. I wanted to get rid of it.  I simply didn't like the way it displayed and left a gap at the top of the page.
Below is an image of what it looked like.
