A Simple Idea To Promote Your Business Services

I'll get right to it. I posted this picture yesterday. It was to bring a few friends up to date on something we had discussed in video calls. I knew they would get a smile out of it. They did. So that part of my mission was successful. I'll tell you later what made them smile. But there was another part of the mission that was just as successful. I wanted my business information in the image.

She's Got A Great Personality But...

I remember being single about 30 years ago and living in Kansas City. Al Gore hadn't invented the Internet yet, so you couldn't Tweet, Text, or even Login to Facebook. The closest thing to a social network was Nickel Draft Beer night in Westport.  On Wednesdays they let the girls go in for free drinks starting at 4PM.  Two hours later, they let the guys in and sold us 'Nickel Drafts'. Guys got braver, and girls got prettier.

I'd spend the two quarters burning a hole in my pocket within the first 30 minutes of getting in the door. I was a high roller in those days and spared no expense when it came to improving my vision. Obviously it was a popular hangout. I would say it was a lot like  "Cheers' except, nobody could remember anybody's name.

Giving free advice is easy. You just open your mouth and start yammering away. Don’t bother about your personal experience. Just tell them what they need to be doing. Whether it’s business, personal, community or global doesn’t matter. Just flap your jaws. No real need to be able to back it up. After all, it’s advice. And it’s free. Sorta.

Some people call Location, Location, Location the three most important decisions to make in business. Domains are your 'Location' on the Internet. But this isn’t the same old story about “vanity domains”. It’s about being Human with your Big Ideas.

Let’s Dive In With A Quick Question.

How do you get to the website of your insurance agent? What about your doctor? Still don’t know? OK, Let’s do an easy one. What’s the URL to YOUR blog? What about your email? Twitter, Facebook, Etsy, Pinterest, LinkedIn, FourSquare, Instagram and GooglePlus addresses? If you stumble, stutter and mumble something along the lines of ‘h-tee-tee-pee-colon-front-slash-front-slash-dubya-dubya-dubya-dot studmuffin5876-dot-where-the-heck-am-I-dot-com’ you need to move. Or at least admit that you can’t tell anybody where you live.

FourSquare Big Idea - The Follow Up

FourSquare is a location based game. Players use the application to check in when they visit a location. (In the game, the location is referred to as a venue.)  I wrote an article on how you would use it earlier. The object of the game is to be the person who checks in the most at a location. This makes you the 'mayor' of the location. Players leave 'tips' for other players to read. They leave good and bad tips about their experiences at that location. Although this example is about a restaurant, venues are on all types of businesses. You already have a venue, but you may not know it.  All of them have Big Deals waiting to be discovered.

Lights Are On, But Nobody's Home

Dear Customer Service,
   I was in your store today but couldn't get waited on, so I left. I appreciate you putting all your nice price tags out there for me though. Now I can shop in confidence and buy it cheaper elsewhere.
   It wasn't like I didn't try to buy from you. I was there for more than 10 minutes looking around.  I went in all of your showrooms. I even went to the office where I thought your people were. The sign said Contact Us, But Nobody said "BOO" or anything.
     Maybe that's why no one was in your store. I didn't see anybody at all.  You should get a new manager or something. It's unacceptable. Oh... I almost forgot to tell you.  Here's the address of the store I was visiting. .  Signed... Ima Buyer

SEO - Strategic Engagement Optimization

To be honest, I laughed when I first thought about it. I was surprised that I hadn't thought about it before. And I was wondering if anyone else had. Was the expression already 'old' in Internet time?

What Was I Thinking?

I was on mile 6 of an 8 mile run. Since I track my time on each lap, I was focused on staying as close to 9 minute 30 second miles as possible. This would give me a reasonable shot at a 4 and a half hour Marathon. I would beat the younger, less talented, much weaker, and extremely homely+Paul Bond by almost a half hour.But, had I over done the workout? Was my brain suffering from lack of oxygen. Why was I smiling while running? That's not like me at all!

What I See When I Look At Stuff

Everybody is born with two eyes, two ears and one mouth.  I'm no mathematician, but according to the "Holiday Inn Express Guidebook to Better Calculus" that means that we should be looking, and listening at least twice as much as we talk.

Yeah. I know.  

If you've ever had an opportunity to engage me in any discussion concerning technology, you probably had a problem squeezing a word in edgewise during the alleged two-way conversation. You're probably wondering "How can he say that?" Is this one of those pot vs kettle  things, or am I simply not listening to myself.  By the end of this post, I hope to know the answer to that myself. After reading this, I'd appreciate you taking a few minutes to give me some feedback.

How Would You Use FourSquare?

     If you own a small business and you're not using FourSquare, you should close up now. Save yourself the pain of losing it all while working 70 hour weeks. All you're doing is fighting something that is going to happen. With you or without you, people are going to play location based games.

That's Not What I'm Saying

     If you think that I'm suggesting that FourSquare can save your business, your missing the point. But, on the other hand....I am. With the right specials and call to actions, your business could be the most popular venue in your city. Everybody who is playing would be scrambling to become your mayor.  And it would cost you a lot less than regular advertising.
