Should You Host A Site On Google Drive?

MagicalRealms.net is hosted on Google Drive
I've been hosting HTML 'sub sites' on Google Drive for a while. The site in the picture above Magical Realms, is hosted on Google Drive. The video under the Video tab is hosted on Google Drive as well.  It's really not as new a concept as you might think. By using DNS, Sub domains, and other kiddie hack a-rounds, this has been available for a while. Just about anybody that had more than a cut and paste knowledge of "how the stuff works" could do it.  These directories were being used for sharing files and collaborating on documents. They weren't pretty, but they worked.  Because there has been so much interest in it lately, I decided to revisit it and see how difficult it was to make a more presentable site.  I would presume that for most people, the attraction would be to save the $10 a month hosting fees.  You can read the instructions here to see if it's worth it to you.  I'll do my best to stay away from all the blah blah and stick with easier instructions.  Just be aware that if you don't know how to upload files and folders to Google Drive, you need to learn that first.

So You Made An Online Pricing Mistake

First of all, I don't want to belittle the mistake.  It's a big one.  And it doesn't matter if it's ten cents or ten thousand dollars. A wrong price is a wrong price. If you don't believe it, ask the person that's buying it.  Or think back to a time when it happened to you.

It Happens All The Time

According to the research guys, 1 in 10 stores ring up sales at the wrong price. According to these researchers there were 220 stores just in Raleigh, NC that were 'overcharging'.  Of course, these inspectors can't balance a budget, but that doesn't matter. Somebody overcharged the customer and now somebody has to pay.

How Do I Read Thee, Let Me Count The Ways

Like everyone, I am presented with an opportunity to read stuff. Everyday I get links to the latest, greatest, mind expanding articles. Each one is a revelation, an epiphany, and of course 'awesome'.

Hypefully Speaking

According to the linkster, nobody in the universe has ever quite explained it this way. Apparently, I should feel fortunate just to be allowed to read it. Sometimes I get lucky.  But most of the time it's a picture of a cat. Not just any cat though. This one has a funny quote on the picture. Awesome.

Today I Got Lucky

The members of The Circadians are not only voracious readers, but they have a high bar for article sharing. All of their shares are interesting, but sometimes they share something that should be required reading. This was one of those shares.

Don't Waste Your Time Catching Up!

Take a look at the stream to the left. Imaging trying to fish upstream in that current. You'd have to be a strong swimmer, and it would take some time to go very far.  Now imagine fishing downstream in the same current. Even if you catch something it's going to be a struggle getting back to your campsite. Neither scenario sounds like much fun.

Now Imagine Staying Put

And try to catch what's passing in front of you.  The fish have been going upstream and downstream all day. That's what fish do.  You didn't have to move.

How Much Does Google Know About You?

Not only did I personally see three people today that told me they hadn't seen the Five Fifteen in a week or so .. but it was mentioned in a phone call, a couple of emails, and a direct message. So, I apologize, but I've been rather swamped lately. A couple of new websites, blogs, and still working on creating my media station has consumed my otherwise event less days. So.. let's get right to today's message.

How Much Does Google Know About You?

How To Use Facebook "As" Your Page

First of all this question will only apply to you if you have a Facebook account AND are an administrator of Facebook Page or Group. But you may want to read this or watch the video anyway. When I figured the out, it made my life easier in many ways. Mainly because it gave me the ability to do something 'as' a page, rather than show my personal stuff on every post.

Why Is This Important?

As you'll see in the video, I manage more than one page and group. I'm not active in all of them, but I do participate in all of them. I usually 'participate' as the page though, and not me. Doing that keeps the post from showing up in all my friends' news feeds. It only shows up on those that 'like' or 'follow' that page. The result is that I don't bombard friends with things they aren't interested in.

Why Google Authorship Matters

Before we get all settled in here, let me tell you something I have learned in just a few days. Writing in a strict format of 'who, what, when, where, how and why' sections is just too difficult for me. In case you don't know, I'm a bit of a free spirit. So I'm going to change things up a bit and write more like I talk. I hope it works better for all of us.

Have You Ever Wondered?

Why do some search results have people's pictures in them? Well, thats because they are using something that Google calls 'authorship tags'. Those tags are actually a little piece of code that tells your browser where to get the picture from. I don't know whether it's a 'written in stone' requirement that the information come from a Google(or Gmail) account. But I do know it's a lot easier if you use Google.

Why Don't People Like My Page?

As promised, if a question is sent in, it will be answered here. I had so many questions sent in yesterday I had to respond directly to some. I'm trying to avoid sending out more than one 'Five Fifteen Report' per day. Please bear with me. Today's question: "I've done everything I know to do, but I still don't have a bunch of likes on my Facebook page. So.. why haven't a bunch of people 'liked' my Facebook page?

Who's Cares?

Likes really don't mean as much as you think. I can buy 1000 "likes" for $5. If I were really vain, I'd have done that a few years ago. The best way to answer this question is to start by asking "Have you ever had an email from Stan Bush or any company that he represented asking you to 'like' my page?" The answer is no. There are reasons for this.

The Five Fifteen - March 25, 2013

You already know how much I like cute little names for things. Names like "Five Little Bigs" , "Area 51" and 'The Five Fifteen". You probably also know that I like to ask Who, What, When, Where, How and Why. What you might not know is why I'm sending you this email. Who Am I Sending This To? First of all, if you're getting this email it means that we are 'connected' in some way. Whether you're a friend, family, or client doesn't matter. We know each other. Somewhere along the line you either subscribed to this list, or I added you to it. If you don't want to receive it anymore, just click the little "unsubscribe' button at the bottom of the email. You'll be immediately removed and it will save both of us some time.  If this is your first time here, you can subscribe here.

ThingLink's Crystal Ball

I was busy, but I was also bored. I was busy and bored. Bored and busy...blah blah blah. Maybe a better way to say that is "I was bored of being busy."
I was converting a 125,000+ page website and had been dealing with MySQL, PHP, and Java for about a week. Every time my eyes closed for more than a minute, this is what flashed across my eyelids: <dreams>Crushed!</dreams>. {lame coding joke}

Keyboards And Kindness

My wife doesn’t read much stuff on the Internet. No news sites. No Pinterest stuff. And no blogs. Not even mine. Sure, she stalks the kids on Facebook, tells me I said something bad, and answers email. But other than that she’s mostly focused on Genealogy. Something I’m very interested in not doing. Not even on a bet. I guess it’s a good thing she doesn’t read them though. Since today is going to be a little bit about her.

Using Social Sub Domains

Some people call Location, Location, Location the three most important decisions to make in business. Domains are your 'Location' on the Internet. But this isn’t the same old story about “vanity domains”. It’s about being Human with your Big Ideas.

Let’s Dive In With A Quick Question.

How do you get to the website of your insurance agent? What about your doctor? Still don’t know? OK, Let’s do an easy one. What’s the URL to YOUR blog? What about your email? Twitter, Facebook, Etsy, Pinterest, LinkedIn, FourSquare, Instagram and GooglePlus addresses? If you stumble, stutter and mumble something along the lines of ‘h-tee-tee-pee-colon-front-slash-front-slash-dubya-dubya-dubya-dot studmuffin5876-dot-where-the-heck-am-I-dot-com’ you need to move. Or at least admit that you can’t tell anybody where you live.

Don't Let Their View Block Your Vision

You've experienced it. You've spent hours, maybe even days, months or years creating something. You rolled it over and over in your mind until you thought it was just right.  Then when you show someone your 'Big Idea" their response is "Gee. I don't get it. I don't know what this is. What are you trying to do here? I want to see you do this. Why in the world would anyone ever buy a pet rock? This will never fly. It's a lead balloon. Trust me. I'm Gumby dammit!  " Yes indeed. If you're not careful their view will block your vision.

Write Like A New York Times Best Seller

So you just joined Chris Brogan's Blog Topics Master Class and you're somewhat apprehensive. More than likely you experienced a few moments of indecision before joining.  Afterwards you probably had some level of buyer’s remorse. At some point you may have even thought you would live to regret this.

It's A Thin Line, Between Like and Like.

But then you are mentioned in the group by Chris. All of a sudden you are the main subject of a group of people that 'like' you.  You began to feel more comfortable, but still have questions.  Questions like: “If they 'like' you, why don't they 'friend' you?” Are you too late to the party?  Has everything already been discussed?  Everyone seems to be rocking along and you didn't even get a chance to see the guy drawing the circles on the board!  Regret is slowly being replaced by resignation.  The resignation that you are going to have to make an effort to figure out what you bought. Spending time in the group might help, so you log in to Facebook and visit the group.

The Seven First Steps To Build Your Community

The girl on the left is my daughter.  On the right is my son in law.  The woman in the black dress on the left is his mother.  She's standing next to her life long best friend.  Her friend drove 500 miles to be at the wedding. And this is the only photo taken of them together at the wedding with the newlyweds. That's me in the middle. Boy were they surprised!

They Weren't Happy Campers!

They were completely unaware that I was behind them. The first time they saw the picture was in the  photographers proofs. Needless to say the gauntlet was taken down. Then it was hurled at my head.

Twitter Info

The stuff that I know about Twitter is bigger than a breadbasket and smaller than a bus.  I got a Twitter account early, but succumbed to the local peer opinion that it was just a waste of time.  Nothing could have been further from the truth.

What Is It?

According to the site "Twitter is an information network that brings people closer to what’s important to them."  Yeah. Whatever.  It didn't start like that. It started as just a bunch of text messages by people that were having fun. Their big draw was statuses that told people "What you are doing right now!"

LinkedIN Listings

There are over 175 Million professionals on LinkedIn. I have to admit that this is a network that I have largely ignored. When I joined it in July 2005 it was just beginning to become popular.  I am going to enjoy exploring this more.

What Is It?

LinkedIn boasts itself as the World's Largest Professional Organization. This is 'probably' true since the connections there are usually business related. The ability to recommend and endorse others are a big part of this community.

Google Plus Info

I'm not going to waste your time by asking you to read my take on Google Plus. There are plenty of people posting about that. Google's Learn More should be your first start.  You're probably not here for that anyway. You want to know how to use it to do one of three things.
     1. How to connect to your family and friends.
     2. How to connect to your customers.
     3. How to get people to connect to you.

I do talk about those kinds of things on this blog. But this isn't the page for that.  This is just a page to tell you what Google Plus is. And Isn't.

Facebook Facts

What more can be said about Facebook, other than 'It's Huge".  At this writing I'm not sure how many people have joined it.  Facebook changed the way things were done on the Internet in a huge way. Everything else pales in comparison at this point.

What Is It?

It's the number one social network as of this writing. Everybody is on it, including your grandmother. People go there to exchange information about people, places, and products.
