Introducing "The S.T.A.N. Plan"

Using Social Sub Domains

Using Social SubDomains

Some people call Location, Location, Location the three most important decisions to make in business. Domains are your 'Location' on the Internet. But this isn’t the same old story about “vanity domains”. It’s about being Human with your Big Ideas.

Let’s Dive In With A Quick Question.

How do you get to the website of your insurance agent? What about your doctor? Still don’t know? OK, Let’s do an easy one. What’s the URL to YOUR blog? What about your email? Twitter, Facebook, Etsy, Pinterest, LinkedIn, FourSquare, Instagram and GooglePlus addresses? If you stumble, stutter and mumble something along the lines of ‘h-tee-tee-pee-colon-front-slash-front-slash-dubya-dubya-dubya-dot studmuffin5876-dot-where-the-heck-am-I-dot-com’ you need to move. Or at least admit that you can’t tell anybody where you live.

 That’s Not Where I Live

Yes it is. To people want to connect to you with something other than carrier pigeon, it’s exactly where you live. If it doesn’t roll off the tip of your tongue like honey on toast, you need to move. I know this from experience. I lived at http://www.salestrainingandnetworking.com for over 15 years. Try punching that in on your cute little smart phone keyboard. I bet I lose at least an hour a week just from fat fingering log ins. If it's a problem for me, I can only imagine what it's been for others. They probably gave up on sending me email. So I moved to StanBush.Net. It's a lot easier. So are my Social Sub domains.

What Do You Mean "Social Sub Domains"?

Sub domains are part of a bigger site. Read about them here.  Most Social Networking sites don't use them for their users. For example, when you signed up for Twitter the user name TomJones wasn’t available. So you decided TomJones062483 would work. After all, you were born on June 24, 1983 or 062483. Brilliant idea! It’s easy for you to remember! Twitter generously created http://Twitter.com/TomJones064283 for you. Congratulations! You'll always know what it is!
But here is the reality. After 5 years of marriage I was finally able to remember my wife’s birth year. And she still cringes when I say “We have children born between ‘1980 and 1990-something.” And now you're asking me to remember your birthday? I’ll forget your Twitter user name as soon as it comes out of your mouth. I'm just a mere mortal.

There Are Exceptions

I have a friend named Rex. He used ‘SexyRexy69’ when he signed up. I always remember the year he was born and where. So do ALL the mothers in his 6 year old daughter’s Girl Scout Brownie Troop. They use Twitter to send out announcements. They weren't sending any announcements to him. So he dropped that account and opened another one more ‘girl scout friendly”.

What About The Other Sites

LinkedIn, Facebook, and some of the others are no different. Google Plus is a nightmare. I know they are working on that +name-thing. That won’t help me. There is a Grammy award winning singer named Stan Bush. http://plus.google.com/+stanbush will probably be his. I’ll still be available at https://plus.google.com/103618956037161965093/posts . Great! That would look awesome on a business card. Luckily I came up with a solution for this a long time ago. Use Social Sub Domains.

What I Am Suggesting

You saw my Google Profile address. You’ll never remember that. But can you remember http:// socialsite.com/stanbush What about http://Instagram.com/stanbush? Both of them work.  Below are other examples of my Social Subdomains:

I’m not suggesting that this idea is going to make a dent in the Internet. I’m not saying that it’s the next big thing. But if we met at a party and and I asked you for your LinkedIn profile, what would you say? If you asked me for mine I would say stanbush.linkedin.com.  You can remember it.  I think that's a big deal..

How Unique Are You

The Internet has revealed that names are not as unique as we thought. Search for your name and I’m sure you’ll find those other people. They are using the same sites you do. The likelihood that your user name is available across all those sites is slim. Twitter.yourdomain.com is always available. You control your sub domains. You can point it to any URL the site generates. And if they change it, you can change where it points to.
